Training
We all dream of having that perfect dog, the dog that behaves exactly as we always imagined the perfect dog behaves. The problem is, whether we want our dogs to be laid back, calm companions, or energetic exercise partners, we cannot expect our dogs to behave to our expectations without the proper training. Consistent, engaging training can stimulate our dogs while calming our nerves, so we have put together some tips from our trainers, as well as some links to other ideas, to help you train your dog.
A Lifelong Process
Too often we see owners take one of our training courses, teach their dogs to come when called and sit on command, and then we see them again a few months later taking the same course. The problem was not that the dog simply forgot how to perform the tasks asked of them, but that the owner became complacent. They were happy with where the dog was and believed they needed to go no further. This view, however, only takes into account the needs of the owner, and not the dog. Dogs need stimulation and guidance. Coming when called and sitting on command are really just one product of dog training. The other is the mental wellbeing of the animal.
Exercise
Keeping a dog’s mind healthy through training is not enough. They also must by physically healthy in order to thrive in all aspects of their lives. Consider the amount of exercise you are willing to give when choosing your breed (and if you are not willing to exercise at all… consider a hamster) and consistently allow your dog this time with you. Not only will learning to walk or run on a leash help the dog’s mind, but it will give the dog another opportunity to see you as a confident leader.
Experiment
Especially if you are not a professional trainer with years of experience, you are unlikely to find a training method that works for all or even most types of dogs. A timid dog might need something an overly social dog does not, so while it is nice to watch a celebrity dog trainer on television (and while they may have great ideas) it is best to develop the best training methods for you and your dog. This requires two things: knowledge and experimentation. Without one, the other means nothing. So do some research and then start finding out what will work best for your dog.
